Sick Day

Last week Sonya had her first sick day of school the year.  She was totally devastated to miss school.  Let me just say I wasn't to happy that she had to miss school either.  I had to cancel lunch plans with my friend and some other errands that I had to run.  I had to make a choice to be a grump because my plans were shot, or I could take care of my girl and cheer her up with a fun activity.  I chose B.  I dug down deep and tried to think of a craft to do that would make her happy, and I was capable of executing.  So I decided we would make a crown.  I had a little bit of wrapping paper left on a cardboard roll.  I took the paper off the roll and cut in half for Sonya to decorate, and I used the remainder of the paper as a drop cloth for easy clean up.  Then I pulled out the paint, glue, stick on letters and glitter.
Let the crafting begin

Making the actual crown took all of ten minutes, but the glitter and paints were another 45 minutes of messy fun.

Big Baby T also wanted in on the action.
The mess escalated through out our morning, but I went with the flow because Sonya was having a great time.

I promise she was having fun, even though this face might tell you something different.
Sonya decided to line up all of her paints like a snake.

Here is the scene we created.  I painted the sun, and Sonya painted the ocean.
That purple blob by the paints is a dolphin Sonya wanted me to paint.
Looks like flipper right?
Here is the mess we ended with.

All in all it was a fun morning, with a whole lot of clean up.
My sick little girl was happy so it was totally worth it.
Here is the final product, that started our messy morning.
I promised I cheered her up.
She was just a little annoyed to look away from Empire Strikes Back, her favorite movie.
I think I might be ready to try some modge podge.
Not sure if I am ready for such a big step in my crafting life.
 I will keep you posted.

I Heart Faces- Chalk

This week's photo challenge over at I Heart Faces is chalk.
I knew what photo I wanted to use immediately when I saw this challenge.
It is a photo of Sonya that I have posted before.
We were playing in the backyard and she took the wet chalk right to her face.
This could be one of all time favorite pictures of my girl.

The First Lie

Last week Sonya told her first real lie.  It was heart breaking.  We were at home and I noticed the house was hot, but was too busy to really check the air conditioning.  Josh came home, checked the thermostat and noticed the heat was on.  We asked Sonya if she had touched the buttons on the thermostat, which the day before we had told her not to touch.  She got a blank stare on her face and after being asked a couple of times, reluctantly shook her head no.  We asked her again and told her we wanted her to tell us the truth (one of our main house rules).  We got the same response, blank stare and shaking her head no.  She had a lot of trouble actually saying the word no.  We told her that we believed what she was telling us and Josh got up to walk away.  At this point, she began to crumble.  Her face became panicked, she started breathing heavily, her eyes welling.  I asked her again (very calmly) did you touch the button - and the tears began to flow.  Sonya finally admitted to touching the buttons - she was VERY sad and just wanted Mama and Dadda to hold her.  We told her that we were not upset about the buttons, but that she did not tell the truth and that we loved her very much.  I have to say that I was quite relieved that my daughter had such a hard time lying to us.  We knew from the get go that she was not telling the truth, but we wanted to give her the chance to fess up.  My girl has grown up so much the past couple of weeks.  This was one of those teachable moments with your kids you kind of dread because you can actually see they are capable of sin.
But it was also such a sweet moment, to see her confess, apologize, repent, and as a family be able to share in forgiveness and love.

Raccoon Tales

It has been a while since my last Raccoon Tales post.  Well today was a doozy.  Sonya asked me to make her afternoon smoothie, the latest snack obsession.  I obviously was not fast enough to make her smoothie because I walked in and found this.
Can you tell what it is?
A favorite in our house, and Ralphie Parker's.
Don't worry this isn't a crummy commercial.
Sonya decided to to have a little chocolate snack pre-smoothie.

Have you ever seen a face covered in chocolate look so lovely.

I went ahead and made the smoothie.
Today's mix:
vanilla yogurt
frozen blueberries
two frozen strawberries
chia seeds
a scoop of ovaltine
chocolate almond milk
Happy scrounging.
